Description

Hale Polu (Blue House) is perfectly located on the Hamakua Coast in Laupahoehoe, half way between Hilo and historic Honoka'a. This is a three bedroom, two bathroom home perched on the lower slopes of Mauna Kea, less than a quarter mile from the coastal cliffs and blue Pacific Ocean. There are fantastic ocean views from the comfortable lanai, the living room, and from two of the three bedrooms. The house sits on a large lot with over half an acre of grassy slope planted with mangoes, white pineapples, avocados, cheremoya, and kukui nuts. This is where you'll find the real Hawaii; friendly people, farmers' markets, small town restaurants, and a slow, relaxing pace of life. Laupahoehoe is an old plantation town from the days when sugar cane dominated Big Island agriculture. What's left is a string of small towns strung along the emerald green Hamakua Coast. From our blue house you can drive 30 minutes south along the coast to Hilo for shopping, kayaking in Hilo Bay, and snorkeling at Richardson Park. Going north along the coast will take you to historic Honoka'a (about a 25 minute drive) where you can check out old downtown before peeling off to nearby Waipio Valley, a scenic wonder you can explore by foot, horseback, or by horse drawn wagon. On the way back, be sure to stop at the TEX Cafe in Honoka'a for the malasadas (scrumptious Portuguese donuts). About 45 minutes north from the house is Waimea, the town in the mists of the Kohala Mountains famous for cool nights, the Cherry Festival, and pancakes the size of hubcaps at the Hawaiian Style Cafe. Other places within easy driving distance from Hale Polu are: Umauma zip line -10 minutes, Akaka Falls - 15 minutes, Kohala's white sand beaches (Mauna Kea Beach, Hapuna Beach) - 1 hour, and Volcanoes National Park - 1 hour, 15 min. Or you could just stay home at Hale Polu, open all the windows, and read a good book with the Pacific Trade Winds wafting through the house. Just down the hill â about a 10 minute walk â is the 50's Cafe where you can get a Hawaiian Loco Moco or a burger and fries. And remember, our kitchen is fully equipped and ready for you to apply your culinary talents to the locally grown foods you can find at local farmers markets. E komo mai (welcome). Hale Polu is one of eight homes on a private street, all on large lots with great separation for peace and quiet. The neighbors are friendly and not obtrusive. Note: We have Direct TV cable service and a TV with built-in DVD. We also have a high speed wi-fi internet connection for laptops, tablets and mobile devices. Cell phone service is excellent for most providers. This is a newly furnished house with brand new queen beds, sleeper sofa, linens, towels, dining set, kitchen ware, microwave and living room furniture.
