The Lac du Flambeau nation was deeded to the Chippewa tribe in the 1870's by the United States Government. This estate was the first property ever purchased from the Native American official To To Tom and the Lac du Flambeau tribe by a non-Native American, Nicholas Hultin a Chicago entrepreneur. Over time Mr Hultin sold off some of the lots on the lake and built his audacious rustic getaway. Built in 1923 by Swedish carpenters for Nicholas Hultin, this French Norman style chateau âPiese Sur Pieseâ log structure is one of only 2 such surviving examples of this expensive and exquisite construction method in North America, the other being in Canada. The boat house by itself is also on the national registry and is without equal on the Lac du Flambeau chain... The property is situated on a peninsula between Lake To To Tom and Long Interlaken Lake in Lac Du Flambeau with almost a mile of uninterrupted shoreline. The property was also once the summer home of the prominent Wisconsin Johnson family, founders of the Johnson Wax company & well known for their Frank Lloyd Wright designed home and factory headquarters in Racine WI. In the 1970s the home and the boathouse both were added to the national registry of historic places by the United States Department of the Interior. It is unusual that the both buildings separately meet the criteria for this distinction and you will be impressed with the appeal of each.
