Description

WE ARE NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED. We will greatly miss our guests and the joy they have brought our lives! We would like to thank all those who have stayed with us. Our custom built log home sits in a tranquil setting on the New River and at the foot of a mountain with a view of surrounding mountains. The location is way off the beaten path on a designated scenic drive, but only about 15-20 minutes from the interstate. The drive to the home is exciting as one enters the National Gorge Scenic River through a series of switchbacks, crossing the river over an historic bridge with a sharp turn onto a 1 1/2 lane road toward the cabin. The master bedroom is large and filled with antiques. Across the hall, is a bathroom with separate tiled shower and jetted tub. The hallway spills into a combined kitchen/dining/living area with vaulted ceiling and stacked stone fireplace. Up the stairs, one enters a separate living area that overlooks the downstairs. The upstairs bedroom has a private porch overlooking the mountain and it also has an adjoining bathroom with another jetted tub. The wraparound porch features several sittting areas and porch swings. There is covered parking in an adjoining carport that also has a gas grill. Beside the river, is a large pavilion with electricity, several sitting areas, hanging porch swing, and outdoor stone grill. One could spend all their time lounging at the home in total relaxation with only short trips into nearby Beckley for supplies. But, there is a small walking beach at the end of the road (as the river curves behind the mountain). Or cross back over the bridge and make an immediate left into Glade Creek Park. Hiking takes you past a waterfall with a swimming hole at the bottom. Or don't go over the bridge and instead drive 2 min.into Prince to pick up friends at the Art Deco train depot with mosaic tiled floors (featuring a picture of Chessie the Cat, the C&O Railroad mascot) and wall mural of a nearby coal town. Or keep going through Prince toward Babcock State Park and see the most photographed mill in the world and hike their trails. Many people go a step further and drive north 20-30 min to historic Fayetteville for lunch, and visit the Canyon Rim Visitor's Center with amazing views of the New River Gorge Bridge (the longest single-span steel-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere and higher than several 'Washington Monuments'). On the way home, take a detour toward the historic ghost town Thurmond. Visit the the only town in the world with a railroad track as the main street. Learn about the coal barons and world's longest poker game at the interpretive center at the depot and hike the famous Mary Ingles trail. Stop for some WV pan fried trout at the Tamarack (back in Beckley), where only WV handcrafted items are sold. That is one possible day. Some people prefer hiring a professional guide for whitewater rafting, rock climbing, or the new Zip Line tour through the canapy of native hemlocks (as featured in Popular Mechanics magazine). Don't forget Grandview Park with short hikes of gorgeous views, open air amphitheatre, and be sure to climb to the top of Turkey Spur for views of your rental home. After that, visit Sandstone Falls or take in a PGA tour at the famous Greenbrier Resort (or a wine symposium? spa? concert?...) Let us know what your interests are and we can help you plan your trip. Ever wonder what its like in a coal mine? Take 'a journey into the earth' just up the road at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Join fans from around the world for the Appalachian String Band Music Festival at Camp Washington Carver, every year in August. Or take a fall foliage train tour during Hinton Railroad Days in October. Old Royal Lodging is located adjacent to Bechtel Summit Reserve, home to the new Boy Scouts of America high adventure base, the 2013 National and 2019 World Jamborees.
